In 2011 we learned about Aniplant, a Cuban charity which cares for street dogs and cats in Havana. They are working with very few resources but a great deal of enthusiasm, dedication and the expertise of volunteer vets. They had identified that the focus of their efforts had to be sterilisation campaigns, in order to reduce the number of breeding animals on the streets.

In April 2011, Dick and Christine White visited Aniplant and discovered that Nora Garcia Perez, the charity's Director, had harnessed the services of a team of volunteer vets who were totally committed to tackling the problem, but with no adequate facilities. Nora was promised that the Dick White Charitable Foundation would provide funds to convert their derelict building into a working clinic. This was achieved and efforts are now being channelled towards providing continuing professional development for Cuban veterinarians.
